Instructions for the Authors

The Journal of Populism Studies is an international, peer-reviewed, and open-access journal publishing high-quality, original research. Please see JPS’s Aims & Scope for information about its focus and peer-review policy.
The journal only publishes manuscripts in English. Accepted articles will be published online as soon as they are accepted. The hard-copy of issues will be published quarterly.
JPS accepts the following types of articles:

  • Research
  • Review
  • Book Review

JPS publishes research from diverse theoretical, methodological, and interdisciplinary backgrounds that address topics related to populism. Articles are expected to adhere to scientific standards and provide a discussion of the application of the research to contribute to the literature of populism studies. Upon submission, articles are reviewed by the editors for quality and fit. All research articles that pass the initial review will undergo a double-blind review process, with the final decision for publication remaining with the editor-in-chief.

Review articles take a selection of recent publications as the starting point for a general discussion of the field, explaining how they contribute to current research and debates. Authors should analyze the texts under review on their own terms and situate them in broader disciplinary, empirical, and, where appropriate, interdisciplinary contexts. They are subject to the same peer review process as research articles.

Book Reviews

Same as review articles but only one book is reviewed.

Special Issues

The editors welcome suggestions for special issues on relevant subjects. Special issues may be the result of either a direct invitation by the board of editors or may be proposed by a prospective guest editor. In either case, all submissions must be fully peer-reviewed in consultation with the senior editor. The board of editors retains the final decision on all publication matters, including layout, content, and publication date. Individuals interested in submitting a special issue should send a brief proposal to the editors, along with a brief curriculum vitae, the proposed title of the special issue, a list of potential contributors as well as the titles and abstracts of their articles. The editors and guest editor will liaise about potential peer reviewers. It is the responsibility of the guest editor to ensure that articles meet the standards of JPS in terms of content, language, and overall suitability for publication. Before sending the final versions of the article to the editors, the guest editor should ensure that each article has been fully copy edited.

Double-Blind Peer Review

This journal follows a double-blind reviewing procedure. Authors are therefore requested to submit:
A blinded manuscript without any author names and affiliations in the text. Self-identifying citations and references in the article text should be avoided.
A separate title page, containing title, all author names, affiliations, ORCID IDs, and e-mails of all authors. When available, please also include ORCIDs and social media handles (Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn). One author will need to be identified as the corresponding author, with their email address normally displayed in the article PDF and the online article. Authors’ affiliations are the affiliations where the research was conducted. If any of the named co-authors moves affiliation during the peer-review process, the new affiliation can be given as a footnote. Please note that no changes to affiliation can be made after your paper is accepted. Any acknowledgements and disclosures should also be included on this page.

Manuscript Submission

Please provide an abstract of 150 to 200 words. The abstract should not contain any undefined abbreviations or unspecified references.
